Olena’s Garden

Olena Skytsiuk is one of the foremost practitioners of Ukrainian Petrykivka painting, a technique in which special brushes crafted from cat hairs create a visual effect unlike any other. In each design, like that reproduced on our Moonlight cover, thousands of small strokes combine to create colorful miniature scenes.

Special Edition

Ludwig van Beethoven’s musical expressions of heroism and struggle mirror his personal tragedies, including the loss of his hearing and a tumultuous family life. The autograph manuscript of Violin Sonata No. 10 in G Major featured on this Beethoven’s 250th Birthday cover was written in 1812.

REMBRANDT’S 350TH ANNIVERSARY

LEWIS CARROLL, ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Embellished Manuscripts Collection

On an 1862 boat trip, Charles Ludwig Dodgson (known to us as Lewis Carroll) entertained three sisters with a tale about a girl falling down a rabbit hole and into wondrous adventures with peculiar creatures. In 1864, Dodgson wrote and illustrated his story and our cover is a reproduction of that handwritten manuscript.

Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, physicist, futurist and engineer. Our cover features a sketch of his turbine research, reproducing a document held in Belgrade’s Nikola Tesla Museum. Today, his legacy endures with Tesla, Inc., which specializes in electric vehicles, solar panels and lithium-ion batteries.

OLIVE FAIRY

Lang’s Fairy Books

This captivating image comes from the first edition of Scottish poet and anthropologist Andrew Lang’s The Olive Fairy Book. Compiled in 1907 by Lang, under the editorial guidance of his wife, Leonora (Nora) Alleyne, and illustrated by Henry Justice Ford, the book was one in a twelve-part series known as Lang’s Fairy Books, with each book named for the color of its fairy.

Johann Arndt was a German theologian who is now recognized as a forerunner of “pietism,” a popular 17th-century Lutheran movement. This intricate, ornamental binding was originally designed to house the 1697 edition of Arndt’s best-known work, Paradiesgärtlein.

Peking Opera Embroidery

During the Tang Dynasty (618–907), the Emperor Taizong founded an opera school called Liyuan (Pear Garden). Chinese opera reached its pinnacle under the Qing court (1644–1911), giving birth to what is known as Peking Opera. Reproduced here is a piece of beautifully embroidered opera skirt from that era.

Sacred Tibetan Textiles

Artistic, religious and cultural traditions unite in this handwoven design. The fabric we have reproduced is an expression of the weaver’s cultural heritage. In the Buddhist tradition, the term “mandala” refers to a spiritual symbol representing the universe, specifically when in a geometric pattern as seen here.

Gold Inlay

The 19th-century binding recreated on our Gold Inlay cover was composed of solid metal covered with a fine layer of gold and engraved by skilled craftsmen. A strong archetype of the German Neo-Renaissance style, the original book design was likely a replica of a 16th-century cover.

This cover urges you to imagine yourself walking along the winding lanes that are home to the weavers of Varanasi, India. At one time there were as many as 300,000 weavers in the area, but today there are no more than 40,000. We have named it Gulabi after the Urdu word for “pink.”

Mira Botanica

Before Dutch still life painting developed, artists illuminated handwritten manuscripts to add emotional power to a written work. A celebrated practitioner of this style was Joris Hoefnagel. Reproduced here is a page he illuminated for the Mira calligraphiae monumenta, a mid-16th-century manuscript by Georg Bocskay.

This cover is based on the binding for a book titled Chroniques, published by Salel Binder in Paris in 1514. The exuberance of the design reflects the splendor of the Renaissance approach to decoration. In this green-blue cover, you may see the intricacies of your own stories.

Exotic Marquetry

In a first for our Paperblanks collection, this cover was inspired by a piece of antique furniture! The original ebony cabinet was designed in 18th-century England using pieces of mother-of-pearl marquetry that were restored from an earlier piece, likely crafted in the East Indies.

Taj Mahal Flowers

The Agra design is named for Agra, India, where the Taj Mahal is located. It reproduces a Gérard Degeorge photograph of one of the Taj Mahal’s iconic marble flowers. To carve into marble is to commit to perfection. Any mistake meant the whole slab had to be discarded. Each of these marbled flowers is its own masterwork.

Taj Mahal Flowers

India’s Taj Mahal is one of the world’s greatest monuments to love. Our Shah cover is named for the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, who commissioned the grand mausoleum to house the tomb of his most favoured wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It reproduces a photograph by Gérard Degeorge of one of the Taj Mahal’s iconic marble flowers.

The Queen’s Binding

Nobility and grace are restored in our filigreed Restoration design. Originally crafted in 1675 by the Queens’ Binder “A,” the balance of open space and intricate elements make it a shining jewel of the period. The binding was created to hold The Government of the Tongue by Richard Allestree, provost of Eton College.

Our Kirikane collection reproduces artwork by Sayoko Eri, a devoted revivalist of the ancient kirikane technique, using our unique printing process. Kirikane translates from Japanese to “cut gold,” and is an art form traditionally used to decorate Buddhist artifacts with gold metal leaf.
